A Quiet Paradise: Halki (Chalki) Island

An Island Community as Beautiful as a Fairytale on the Hillside of Rhodes

Sometimes you want to escape the chaos of big cities and spend time in a quiet place surrounded by nature.

Halki Island, which I discovered after Meis, is exactly such a place; it was a place I discovered for the precious moments I was in and felt peace in every second.

This small island, located right next to Rhodes, has not yet been flooded with tourists and has managed to preserve its natural beauty.

Chalki Island

One Day, One Life

The moment I first stepped into Halki after an hour's drive from Rhodes, I felt a strange sense of peace inside me. Walking through the streets, seeing the colorful doors and balconies decorated with colorful flowers and bougainvillea, and meeting the friendly and sincere people surrounded my soul like a painting.

And believe me, I was in a fairy tale that I never wanted to end and I didn't want to wake up...

I was impatient to discover the island at first, I wanted to discover this magical atmosphere as soon as possible and trace every paving stone.

I quickly settled into the house I had rented and started my first tour of the island, passing through the labyrinthine backstreets and seeing that all the roads led to the sea.

Then of course it was time to swim in the most beautiful shade of that clear blue sea. I went to Pontamos Beach which is a 10 minute walk away on the back side of the island.

You know, there are some places where the water is so clear that it looks like a part of the sky. The sea of the beach he enjoyed in Halki was exactly like that.

Here you feel as natural and a part of nature as possible, no one comes and bothers you! You can spread your towel wherever you want, sunbathe and enjoy the sea and the sun to the fullest.

That's exactly what I did, I went into the sea beautifully, laid out my towel under a tree and enjoyed the sun, the sea and just being there.

Flavors of the Evening and Greek Dance Rhythms

After the beach, I changed my clothes and sat down to have a snack, watch the sunset and have a nice rest.

As it was time to look for a place to eat for dinner, I took a look at the restaurants along the island's coast that were opening their new tables.

But there was one that I said, this is exactly where I want to be and I reserved a nice table for the evening at the Black Sea Restaurant ...

As I booked my table and continued to tour, I was carried away by the rhythm of the music. A stage was being set up right in the middle of the island, I said to myself, "You are very lucky Onur, there will be a party tonight!"

After wandering around for a while, taking some photos and videos, it was almost time for dinner...

As a Black Sea person, I sat at my table at this place that caught my eye, ordered Greek salad, grilled sardines and polomari ouzo, and started chatting with the restaurant owner.

When I asked why it was called Black Sea, I learned that their ancestors were from the Black Sea, Georgia, in other words, I had found my fellow countryman and my Laz fellow countryman.

I was struck by this place both because of its name and because it was exactly the tavern decor I was looking for…

Especially when I saw the hanging octopuses, I said yes, this is the place I have to eat.

Anyway, I stopped by to make a reservation beforehand; after all, I was alone and wanted to sit at a good table.

After a nice conversation, I reserved my table for the evening.

Oh, the deliciousness!

The Greek salad I had here was really amazing and made with local herbs, and the sardine appetizers left an unforgettable taste on my palate.

Let the Dance Begin.

After dinner, I went to a bar right there to join the music and dance show held in the square. The friendliness of the local people and my ability to adapt to all conditions combined with the music made me feel like a part of the island, so I took off my slippers and threw myself on the stage.

I danced and had fun for hours.

In fact, I had so much fun that I even had many people buy me drinks at the end of the night :)

Parting Is Hard But...

The next morning it was time to leave Halki and as always I was regretting why I didn't stay longer!

After Meis (Kastellorizo), my favorite island was Halki.

I thought I had a connection here too! Why not?

I shared everything about the island on my Instagram page, and the highlights include real images of the moments you are trying to describe here.

Follow me on Instagram ( @Onurollstyle ) and experience these moments through my eyes.

If you happen to be in Rhodes, I recommend you definitely visit this island right next to it. If you want to escape from a busy pace and do yourself a favor, Halki will be waiting for you there.

How to Get There?

To reach Halki Island, you first need to go to Rhodes. There are trips from Marmaris or Fethiye to Rhodes, this time I went to Rhodes via Meis and from there to Halki. My round trip transportation by ferry costs 21 euros. The ferry ride takes about 1 hour.

Where to Stay?

There are small and cute houses to stay in Halki. I stayed at Atlantis Houses, which I found on booking.com , and paid 71 euros for one night. This accommodation was one of the places that made you feel the texture of the island in the best way. It was a pleasant experience on the island with its 5-minute proximity to the center and its warm atmosphere.
